In the mountain halls of the Fergus clan, a young gnome without a beard is already an outcast. When his father dies and his eccentric granduncle Riddlecracker appears at the cave door with a worn satchel and a riddle for a greeting, Jebeddo's restless life is about to change forever.

Together they venture into the tunnels and beyond, into a world Jebeddo has only ever been heard about in his mother's bedtime stories. A world of goblins and Grimlocks, coyotes who are not quite coyotes, and a vast night sky whose stars might fall at any moment. A world where a star sapphire can steal your mind, an ancient city holds the secret of a lost civilization, and a cobalt dragon with pale jade eyes is waiting in the darkness for exactly the right visitor.
