Silvjär has been home for two seasons, hammering iron in a quiet village, when a bird arrives at the kitchen window with a message tied to its leg.

On the other side of the magic gate, in the land of Norwesis, the spirit of the ancient Bridge of Shadows is failing. Something has bound him to his own stones and is draining the life out of him, and his bridge is beginning to crack. He needs the friends who once promised to return.

They come: a faun who talks to trees, a garwulf who runs on four legs and argues on two, a giant who will not speak of the magic he can work, and a gnome who lives with a dragon and is afraid of the open sky.

What they find is older and colder than a curse. To break it they must cross a desert, open a library that has not admitted a visitor in two hundred years, wake a sleeping tower, and steal back a relic of terrible power from the sorcerer who has hidden behind its walls for a hundred years.

None of them is strong enough. None of them is clever enough. None of them is going alone.
